Astakhov supports decriminalization of homosexuality, opposes its propaganda

Moscow, December 5, Interfax - Russian Children's Rights Ombudsman Pavel Astakhov has opposed propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia.

"I oppose any propaganda of pedophilia and other addictions. That is simply impermissible," Astakhov told Interfax on Monday.

"We had a Criminal Code article concerning homosexuality but it was decriminalized. That is correct but there must be no propaganda or permissiveness of anything," he said.

The St. Petersburg Legislative Assembly passed in the first reading a bill on November 16 to punish propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia amongst the young with administrative measures. The new city parliament will continue to hear this document.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko supported the bill.
