Patriarch Kirill calls Belarus a truly sovereign state

Minsk, June 6, Interfax - In the context of globalization, the struggle for identity of nation is a struggle for its survival, Patriarch Kirill said at a meeting with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko in Minsk on Monday.

"In the context of globalization, aimed at making every identity disappear and everyone on planet Earth conform to the same standards, the struggle for identity is a struggle for the survival of the nation. Maybe, not in the physical sense, but in the spiritual and cultural sense, this is survival," the patriarch said.

According to him, woe will be to the human race if all people are cut under one comb.

"Therefore, real sovereignty today is more than political sovereignty. This is the freedom of people. I am glad to testify that Belarus belongs to those states about which it can be said that it is a sovereign state. And God grant that it will be so," Patriarch Kirill wished.

In turn, Lukashenko has called the visit of patriarch a good sign.

"A difficult time. And it's good that you have come to your land. Not a stranger to you. This is a good sign for our people. A sign of such unity, unity in front of these evil forces (...) Believe me, the truth is on our side. It's always stronger. And we will withstand any pressure on us, whatever it may be. Let it be in the form of an insurrection, or some kind of hybrid wars, or even hot ones. We will survive," Lukashenko said.

"There is experience to survive," the patriarch agreed.

"Know that you are always not at home here, but at home, on your own land," the President of Belarus said.

Last weekend, the patriarch took part in celebrations of the 1030th anniversary of Orthodoxy in Belarus.
