Russian Church tightens coronavirus-related restrictions at Moscow churches

Moscow, January 24, Interfax - The Russian Orthodox Church has imposed additional restrictions on its parishes due to the spread of the Omicron variant of coronavirus and a record increase in the number of infections in Moscow.

"Until the epidemic situation stabilizes, refrain from cathedral services with the participation of clergymen from different churches; and transfer to the online mode the Sunday schools operating in small and poorly ventilated premises at the discretion of the fathers superior," a circular letter from First Vicar of the Russian patriarch for Moscow, Metropolitan Dionysius published on the church website on Monday reads.

Besides, in addition to tightening preventive measures already in place, such as the mask mandate, thermometry and disinfection, the metropolitan strongly recommends postponing in-person events involving large numbers of people until the epidemic situation stabilizes.
