Most Russians say mocking church, national history, customs of other peoples unacceptable poll

Moscow, December 6, Interfax - The overwhelming majority of Russians, or 80%, believe that it is unacceptable to mock the church under any circumstances, while 17% disagree, the Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) said in a statement obtained by Interfax on Monday.

As to whether it is acceptable to joke about specific traits or traditions of other peoples, over two-thirds of respondents, or 69%, said such jokes are unacceptable, and 28% said the opposite.

The vast majority of Russians, 69%, believe that it is unacceptable to joke about national history, including the current and Soviet periods, as well as the era of the Russian empire. Twenty-six percent believe such jokes are acceptable.

VCIOM polled 1,600 respondents aged 18 and up across the country on November 12, 2021.
