Lawyers for defrocked priest Sergy to appeal conviction

Moscow, November 30, Interfax - The sentence handed down to former schema-hegumen Sergy (Nikolay) Romanov in a case on inducement to suicide and arbitrariness will be appealed, his defense team said.

"The ruling will be appealed," Romanov's lawyers said on Tuesday.

Romanov was sentenced by the Izmailovsky District Court of Moscow to three years and six months in a penitentiary after being found guilty of incitement to suicide, infringement on freedom of conscience and religion, and arbitrary behavior. He pleaded not guilty.
