Minsk, January 12, Interfax - The Belarusian Orthodox Church has confirmed the death of Metropolitan Philaret, Emeritus Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus.
"His Eminence Metropolitan Philaret (Vakhromeyev), Emeritus Patriarchal Exarch of All Belarus, died at 85 on January 12, 2021," the Belarusian Orthodox Church said on its official website.
The cause of the metropolitan's death was not specified. Some Belarusian Telegram channels reported earlier that he was diagnosed with the coronavirus infection.
Metropolitan Philaret (Kirill Varfolomeyevich Vakhromeyev) was born in Moscow on March 21, 1935.
He was appointed metropolitan of Minsk and Belarus and patriarchal exarch of East Europe in 1978 and metropolitan of Minsk and Grodno, patriarchal exarch of All Belarus, and a permanent member of the Holy Synod in 1989.
In 1992-2013, he served as metropolitan of Minsk and Slutsk, patriarchal exarch of All Belarus, and archimandrite of the Zhyrovichi Monastery of the Holy Dormition.
In 2006, Metropolitan Philaret was awarded with the title of Hero of Belarus.
