Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, January 7, Interfax - Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed gratitude to Syria for preserving the Christian holy relics at the Umayyad Mosque.
Putin told the Rossiya-1 television channel about seeing the holy site during his last year's visit to Syria during a documentary on this visit on Christmas 2020.
"I also really wanted to visit the mosque you mentioned. Because the relics of John the Baptist are stored there. I did not expect that a mosque would hold the relics of John the Baptist and store it carefully, as they are venerated in the Muslim world," Putin said.
"This closeness of the two religions based on the shared moral and ethical values, common human and humanitarian values, it is bound to spark interest and respect, as well as gratitude to representatives of Islam in this case for preserving the Christian holy relics," he said.
