Azerbaijanis desecrated cathedral in Shushi - Armenian Church

Yerevan, November 16, Interfax - The Armenian Church said it condemns the desecration of the Holy Savior Cathedral in Shushi in the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

"We were pained to learn that the Azerbaijanis who entered the city of Shushi in Artsakh desecrated the Surb Amenaprkich Kazanchetsotsots Cathedral [Holy Savior Cathedral], leaving their traces on the internal and external walls of the church, in the late hours of November 9 and in the early hours of November 10, after the agreement on ceasefire in Artsakh [Armenian name for Karabakh] signed by the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia," the department of the inter-church relations of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin (the spiritual center of the Armenian Apostolic Church) said in a statement released on Saturday.

"We strongly condemn what has happened, calling it open vandalism and a manifestation of intolerance," it said.

"At the same time, we are calling on the international community and the inter-religious inter-church organizations to raise their voice and take relevant steps to prevent the Azerbaijani authorities in Artsakh to do such barbaric and anti-Armenian things to religious and cultural monuments and obelisks," the statement said.
