Unrecognized Karabakh head promises to rebuild cathedral destroyed in Azerbaijan's missile strike

Yerevan, October 8, Interfax - The Christ the Savior Cathedral in the city of Shushi, which was destroyed in Azerbaijan's missile strike on Thursday, will be restored, President of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) Arayik Harutyunyan said.

"The Surb Amenaprkich Kazanchetsots Cathedral [the Christ the Savior Chatheral] in Shushi was hit by terrorists. This manifestation of vandalism runs counter to the laws of the humankind and the God. We will rebuild it," Harutyunyan wrote on Facebook.

The church, which was built in 1868-1887, was destroyed in Azerbaijan's missile strikes on the city of Shushi on Thursday.

During the first Karabakh war in the 1990s, an Azerbaijan depot of Grad rockets was located in the cathedral. The city of Shushi is situated on the hill, from where strikes were delivered on Stepanakert in the 1990s. The Armenian troops took over the city on May 8-9, 1992.
