Minsk, September 11, Interfax - Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei met with the Holy See's Secretary for Relations with States Paul Richard Gallagher in Minsk on Friday to discuss bilateral relations, including in the context of the post-election situation in Belarus.
"The talks focused on topical matters of the bilateral agenda, including in the context of the development of the post-election situation in Belarus," the ministry's press service said.
"The two sides also touched on interaction on the international stage, cooperation within the UN, including Vatican's support for Belarus' initiatives to strengthen the UN role and further advance its Group of Friends United against Human Trafficking.
"[The pair] stressed a mutual interest to preserve the traditionally friendly bilateral relations and maintain high-intensity contact at various levels.
"Makei especially noted the historical role of the Catholic Church in the formation and development of the Belarusian state, while expressing confidence that constructive dialogue with the Holy See is one of the conditions for preserving inter-religious peace and harmony in the country."
