Minsk, September 11, Interfax - A high-ranking Vatican official has arrived in Belarus, the press service for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
"Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, secretary for relations with states within the Holy See's Secretariat of State, will pay a working visit to Belarus on September 11-14," the press service said.
Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei will meet with the archbishop.
Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz, metropolitan of Minsk and Mogilev and chairman of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Belarus, was denied entry to the country on August 31. He was returning from Poland.
In the meantime, excerpts from an interview Kondrusiewicz did with the Polish Catholic TV channel TV Trwam, in which he said that the August 9 presidential election had been held unfairly in Belarus, have been posted on the official website of the Roman Catholic Church.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on September 1 that Kondrusiewicz had been denied entry to the country as "he had received an assignment while in Poland."
Kondrusiewicz was appointed metropolitan of Minsk and Mogilev in 2007. He was elected chairman of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Belarus in June 2015.
