Russian Church calls female circumcision barbaric

Moscow, July 27, Interfax - Head of the Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate Metropolitan Hilarion condemned female circumcision, which is still practiced in some countries of the world.

Answering questions on air Church and the World program on Rossiya-24 TV channel, he commented on an incident that occurred a year ago in Ingushetia, where a nine-year-old girl was circumcised, and now the case is being investigated.

"I think in this case we are talking about a barbaric relic of the past," the metropolitan said as believes that both those who initiated and those who carried out such operations should be punished.

The church official expressed hope that reaction on the case in Ingushetia would stop "zealots without reason" from carrying out such operations, which, according to him, "cannot be considered anything else than mutilation."
