Moscow, March 18, Interfax - The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church has approved the guidelines issued earlier by Patriarch Kirill for the Moscow city and region clergy in relation to the threat of the spread of coronavirus.
The document recommends measures that are unprecedented in the church's post-1917 history. In particular, while the coronavirus threat remains in place, the spoon after each taking of communion will be wiped with an alcohol solution. It also recommended that kissing of the cross and a priest's hands be temporarily stopped.
The guidelines were approved on Tuesday by the Synod, which met by video link, and is to apply to all dioceses which have recorded cases of coronavirus and face the risk of its spread.
