Patriarch Kirill, Synod members to discuss coronavirus prevention

Moscow, March 11, Interfax - Coronavirus prevention measures were among the issues addressed in the meeting of the Holy Synod that opened in Moscow on Wednesday.

The meeting is chaired by Patriarch Kirill.

"By God's mercy there is currently no epidemic, there are just some individual cases. But nevertheless, it will be useful to discuss a possible reaction of our Church, of course, at a later stage of this phenomenon," the patriarch said before the meeting.

The patriarch said the illness is wicked, but added that the Church has gone through many epidemics throughout its history. "Among other things, I remember the cholera epidemic, which agitated the people, the public and the authorities very much then," the patriarch said, adding that the Church has experience of working in such conditions.

The patriarch said he believes well-thought out measures are now being taken in Moscow and St. Petersburg, including in dialogue with the Church, to prevent this disease from spreading.
