Working group to discuss appropriateness of mentioning God in Constitution Kremlin

Moscow, February 3, Interfax - The initiative of the Russian Orthodox Church to mention God in the Russian Constitution should be discussed by the working group on amendments to the Constitution, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

"In this case, all debate takes place in the commission and it should take place there. The commission has very broad representation, various points of view are stated, various proposals are stated, and this proposal will be discussed there as well," Peskov told reporters on Monday, responding to a request to comment on the initiative of Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Russia to include the mention of God in the Russian Constitution and a question as to whether the Kremlin finds this proposal to be appropriate.

"The function of the commission is to take proposals and initiatives that are stated and give some consolidated opinion on the appropriateness or inappropriateness [of inclusion in the Russian Constitution]," he said.
