Moscow, January 16, Interfax - Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar believes the main task of the country's Jewish community is address help to its members.
"Our task is to help people personally. Politicians settle their important tasks, our sphere is address help," the rabbi said on Thursday at his meeting with minister for social equality Gila Gamliel.
He cited Hasidism founder Baal Shem Tov who said that those who want to help people spiritually, first should help them materially. According to him, social programs of the Jewish community are based on this principle.
During the meeting held in the chief rabbi's office the minister spoke about humanitarian mission of religious Jewish communities all over the world.
Gamliel mentioned outstanding progress for the recent 20 years in life of Russian Jews. According to her, Russia has made a great contribution in struggle against anti-Semitism, especially in adapting its definition at the UN level. According to the minister, it is a continuation of the great role, which Russian people played during World War II.
