New U.S. ambassador to Russia prefers ice hockey to ice-water dips

Moscow, January 16, Interfax - New U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Sullivan is planning to play ice hockey whenever he has the time, U.S. Embassy press secretary Rebecca Ross said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry invited the new ambassador to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor Jon Huntsman and "dive into Russian realities," referring to the fact that Huntsman took part in Epiphany dips last year.

"New U.S. Ambassador Sullivan is preparing to move to Moscow, and Russia has been waiting for him for a long time. Wondering whether Sullivan will decide to follow in the footsteps of @JonHuntsman and dive into Russian realities. Russia is waiting, Mr. Sullivan, take a deep dive!" the Foreign Ministry said on Twitter.

Ross sent a response on Thursday with the hashtag @hockey diplomacy. She said Sullivan was actually an ice hockey fan, and she heard he was going to play hockey in Russia whenever he had the time.

Sullivan is due to arrive in Moscow on January 16.

Orthodox Epiphany is celebrated on the night of January 18.
