Orthodox priest in Russia's Jewish Autonomous Region suspected of child molestation

Khabarovsk, November 26, Interfax - The head priest of an Orthodox church of the Birobidzhan Diocese in the village of Amurzet in Russia's Jewish Autonomous Region has been arrested for two months on suspicion of sexually abusing minors, the diocese said in a statement on its website.

The head priest of the Church of Elijah the Prophet in the village of Amurzet of the Oktyabrsky District was detained on November 24, the statement said.

"On the evening of November 25, the Leninsky District Court of the Jewish Autonomous Region ordered that the man, suspected of sexual molestation of minors, be remanded in custody for two months for the duration of a preliminary investigation," it said.

The diocese also issued a decree to suspend the priest from all his church duties for the entire period of investigation, the statement said.
