Kiev, August 19, Interfax - Ukraine has made a great contribution to combating antisemitism, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.
"The murders in Babi Yar enabled the Nazis to continue killing Jews all over Ukraine. The Jews had lived next to the Ukrainians for centuries. They had been creating communities, parties, the movements of Chasidism and Zionism. All that had continued for a thousand years. And everything that had been created for such a long time was destroyed by the Nazis in an instant," Netanyahu said in his speech in Babi Yar in Kiev alongside Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Monday.
The Jews will never forget those crimes and at the same time will always remember the deeds of the righteous gentiles, who had risked their lives and the lives of their families to save the Jews, the Israeli prime minister said.
Netanyahu thanked the president and the government of Ukraine for preserving the memory of the Babi Yar tragedy. "You really make a great contribution to combating antisemitism," he said.
The Israeli prime minister also pointed out that the Babi Yar tragedy made the Jews stronger, and "they went from the nation of the slain to a strong and proud state."
