Moscow, May 28, Interfax - Restoration of the church on the site of the first Russian settlement in California will begin soon, priest Alexander Volkov, the spokesman for Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia, said.
"Restoration of the church in Fort Ross, California, will begin in the near future. It is a place of significance," the priest said at a press conference in Moscow on Tuesday.
He was unable to name the exact date of the start of the construction, because the current stage of the upcoming restoration is paperwork.
Father Alexander additionally said that the number of churches in America is ten times higher than in Russia. "Of course, that's not just Orthodox churches, but in general," he said.
The Russian presence at Fort Ross, northern California, ran from 1812 to 1841.
