Washington, May 21, Interfax - A photograph recently published by the Ukrainian embassy to the United States on its website depicts the deportation of Polish Jews rather than the deportation of Crimean Tatars, the Russian embassy in Washington said on Tuesday.
On the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Deportation of the Crimean Tatar People, the Ukrainian embassy published a photo on its website that shows people being put into railroad cars.
A caption accompanying the photo says "May 18, 1944, it was a day when we couldn't stop Stalin. As a consequence, we mourn the victims of the Crimean Tatars deportation."
According to the Russian embassy, the photo used by Ukrainian diplomats belongs to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and is kept in its photo archive.
According to the museum, the photo depicts the deportation of Jews from the Lodz ghetto in Poland to the Chelmno extermination camp between 1942 and 1944.
"Tactic of Ukrainian diplomacy," the Russian embassy said.
