Moscow, February 19, Interfax - Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) chief Vasily Gritsak's claims that Russia planned the desecration of 20 churches and clergy assaults in Ukraine are preposterous, the Russian Orthodox Church has said.
"I don't know if the SBU people read the Russian author and great Ukrainian [NIkolay] Gogol nowadays, but the Government Inspector's mayor, with his sergeant's widow who flogged herself, would have liked claims that the torching of the Moscow Patriarchate's Ukrainian Orthodox Church places of worship was planned by Moscow," Vladimir Legoyda, head of the Synodal Department for Church, Society and Media Relations, wrote on Telegram on Tuesday.
"Why all this nit-picking, gentlemen? Accuse the OCU [the new Orthodox Church of Ukraine] leader Yepifaniy Dumenko of working for the GRU [Russian military intelligence]. After all, he is effectively blessing church takeovers and violence against canonical Church congregants. What more evidence do you need?" Legoyda said.
