Kiev, December 21, Interfax - U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch met with Epiphaniy, the head of Ukraine's new unified church, at the St. Michael Monastery on Thursday, the online magazine Kiev Eparchial News reported.
"The metropolitan thanked the United States for its efforts to protect religious freedom around the world and for its support for the right of Orthodox believers in Ukraine to have an independent church in accordance with their own choice," the article said.
The sides exchanged opinions on the creation of Ukraine's new church.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called Epiphaniy on December 18 to congratulate him on the recent unification assembly and the creation of the church.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said at his annual press conference on December 20 that Washington's interference in the situation was unacceptable.
