Kiev, December 19, Interfax - Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko has advised representatives of radical organizations against seizing churches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
"I would like to advise certain radicals, who will come to seize [the Ukrainian Orthodox Church's] temples tomorrow: you should not do that. You'll take churches away from the community that'll defend them rather than from Russia. It's necessary to work with the community, convince it and explain that after the establishment of the canonical Ukrainian church they don't need to wander somewhere, they should come to us," Poroshenko said at a meeting with lecturers and students of Ternopol higher education establishments.
Such behavior would only serve Russia, "because the Kremlin wishes that we started a religious war or at least a bloodshed during the unification," he said.
The process of the unification of the churches is long, but irreversible, the Ukrainian president said. A significant number of priests and laypeople are ready to switch to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine now, Poroshenko said.
