Unifying Orthodox assembly in Ukraine to be held on Dec 15 Poroshenko (updated)

Kiev, December 5, Interfax - A unifying assembly for setting up a local Ukrainian Orthodox church will be held at the St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev next Saturday, President Pyotr Poroshenko said.

"The assembly will be held on December 15, 2018," Poroshenko said at a local self-government forum in Kiev on Wednesday.

The participants will elect a primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and adopt the church's statute.

"This assembly will endorse the statute of our new church. This assembly will elect a primate," he said.

Rostislav Pavlenko, an advisor to Poroshenko and the director of the National Institute for Strategic Studies, said earlier that a statute of a unified autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church would be adopted at the assembly.

Last week, the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople formulated proposals on including a tomos of autocephaly (independence) in the church's statute, which Ukrainian hierarchs will consider, Pavlenko said.
