Ukrainian parliament speaker wants to transfer St. Sophia Cathedral to new church created by Constantinople

Kiev, December 3, Interfax - Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Andrey Parubiy has proposed using Kiev's St. Sophia Cathedral for divine services of the "unified local church" that is being created in Ukraine.

"I suggest that St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev be used for services of the new local Orthodox church, for priests' ministry, as the most important and key cathedral of the Ukrainian Orthodox faith," Parubiy said on Monday at a meeting of the conciliatory council of the heads of the factions, committees, and parliament groups.

This issue needs to be discussed, including by parliamentarians, Parubiy said.

On October 18, the Verkhovnaya Rada adopted a presidential law on the transfer of St. Andrew's Church of the Sophia of Kiev National Sanctuary Complex to the Constantinople Patriarchate.
