Any decisions on autocephalous Ukrainian church made amid martial law will be criminal - UOC-MP

Kiev, November 30, Interfax - The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) has reiterated that any decisions regarding the creation of an autocephalous church in Ukraine adopted amid martial law will only serve to further heighten political tensions inside the country.

UOC-MP spokesman Vasily Anisimov told Interfax that today is a particularly unfortunate time for the plans in respect to Ukraine that Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and President Pyotr Poroshenko are trying to put into practice.

"In light of the martial law that has been declared in our country, in light of the fact that the president [Poroshenko] vilified our Church from head to toe just a few days ago, any decisions regarding 'autocephaly' would be absolutely criminal in this situation," Anisimov said when commenting on the results of the meeting of the Constantinople Patriarchate's Holy Synod that ended in Istanbul on Thursday.

The Synod approved the draft tomos of autocephaly for Ukraine, but failed to set a date for the so-called unification assembly.
