Kiev, November 16, Interfax - Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev and All Ukraine has denounced the attempts to tempt the Ukrainian Orthodox Church with the status of "local church."
"The fact that they now want to turn us into a political organization under the name 'local church' is the kind of bait the Church doesn't take. The Church cannot be a political organization," Metropolitan Onufry said on the program The Primate's Word, which will air on Saturday on the television channel Inter.
Those who stay with the canonical church should not fear "defeat by those who are persecuting it," he said.
"Christ told his disciples, and us through them, while completing his service on the earth, his redemptive sacrifice: 'If people persecuted me, they will persecute you, too. If people hated me, they will hate you, too. But have no fear, for I have overcome the world,'" Metropolitan Onufry said on the program announcement.
