Ukrainian Orthodox Church bishops refuse to take part in creation of autocephalous church

Moscow, November 13, Interfax - The Bishop's Council of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church has rejected the idea of its participation in the creation of the so-called "autocephalous church" in Ukraine that would be independent from the Moscow Patriarchate.

"The council of bishops notes that the process of granting the so-called tomos of autocephaly is artificial, forced from outside, does not reflect the church's internal need, will not bring real church unity and will exacerbate divisions and conflicts among the people of Ukraine. In this situation, we consider it impossible for the episcopate, clergy and laypeople of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church to join these processes," the council said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by Interfax on Tuesday evening.
