Kiev, November 13, Interfax - Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev and All Ukraine has denounced external interference in ecclesiastical affairs.
"Our Synod gathered today in order to discuss a very important problem facing us: the situation that has taken shape and is developing around our church today," Onufry said at the beginning of a meeting of the Synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Kiev on Tuesday.
"Attempts are being made to draw the church into political games and turn it into a political tool to attain some earthly goals," he said.
Some external forces are trying to use religion for their own ends and "see the church as a throne, but they don't see Christ sitting upon it," Onufry said.
"Our duty in this world of disinformation is to preserve the purity of the Orthodox faith and fidelity to Christ," he said.
