Kiev, November 9, Interfax - The Lugansk Diocese remains in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
The diocese council expressed support of Metropolitan Onufry of Kiev and called on its flock to strengthen the prayers for him as the sole legitimate primate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, and also for the unity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the diocese told Interfax.
The meeting was chaired by Metropolitan Mitrofan of Lugansk and Alchevsk, who also heads the Department for External Church Relations of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
The clergy of the Sumy and Dnepropetrovsk regions, and also the Kharkov, Poltava, Zaporozhye, Odessa, Kherson, Rovno and Kirovograd dioceses earlier expressed their support of the canonical Church.
On October 11, the Synod in Istanbul invalidated its 1989 decree on the transfer of the Kiev Metropolitanate to Moscow and declared the creation of its metochion in Kiev and rehabilitated the leaders of the self-proclaimed churches in Ukraine. In response, the Synod of the Moscow Patriarchate declared full rupture of its relations with Constantinople.
