Metropolitan Hilarion hopes Ecumenical Patriarchate won't make hasty decision on Ukraine autocephaly

Astana, October 11, Interfax - Metropolitan Hilarion, the head of the Moscow Patriarchate Department for External Church Relations, hopes that the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate will not make any hasty decisions regarding granting autocephaly to the Ukrainian church.

"As far as I know, the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate is meeting [in Istanbul] at this very moment. We do not expect any hasty decisions. We hope that no such decisions will be adopted at all," Metropolitan Hilarion told reporters in Astana on Thursday.

"[Ecumenical] Patriarch Bartholomew has announced the granting of autocephaly to the Ukrainian Church. But the point is that the Ukrainian Church has not requested autocephaly," he said.

"Even those schismatic groups that could become the backbone of a new autocephalous church have not united yet and have not expressed any clear understanding of what this autocephaly should look like," he said.
