Valaam, July 11, Interfax - Russian President Vladimir Putin went to Valaam on Wednesday, the day of memory of St. Sergius and Herman, the founders of the Valaam Monastery.
Last year the president visited this monastery, one of the most revered in Russia, on the same feast day.
At the monastery, Putin attended a liturgy held in the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Cathedral by Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia. The president took communion and talked to churchgoers, congratulating them on the holiday. After the service, the president walked around the monastery with Patriarch Kirill.
Valaam is the largest of several dozen islands of an archipelago in the northern part of Lake Ladoga in Karelia.
