Two religious extremists killed in northern Azerbaijan

Baku, March 7, Interfax - The Khachmaz Jamaat terrorist group has been neutralized in an operation in northern Azerbaijan, and two members of the group have been killed in a shootout, the public relations center of the Azerbaijani State Security Service said on Wednesday.

"The operation uncovered and neutralized the so-called Khachmaz Jamaat terrorist group led by Azerbaijani citizen Sabir Mamedov. On March 6, 2018, the plotting of terror attacks by Jamaat activists Mamedov and Tarlan Salimov was exposed, and the suspects opened fire at a task force of the State Security Service trying to take them into custody. Mamedov and Salimov were killed in the shootout," the service said.

Improvised bombs, weapons, and ammunition were found on the crime scene, it said.

The operation was conducted as part of the criminal case on counts of plotting a terror attack, and participating in a criminal group, the service said. The investigation continues, it added.
