Kizlyar, February 20, Interfax - The tragedy in Kizlyar has united people of various ethnicities and religions living in Dagestan, Vladimir Vasilyev, the republic's acting leader, said.
"Those who wanted to disunite Dagestan's multiethnic and multi-faith society in Kizlyar achieved the opposite reaction: we are more united than ever. We are well aware what the enemies of Dagestan's development were after. The enemies who want to knock down our multinational society, by any means. But they will not succeed," Vasilyev told journalists during a visit to Kizlyar.
For his part, Dagestan's Mufti Ahmad Abdullayev stressed that the tragedy concerns all people of Dagestan and the main task is to make sure that people like the gunman who fired at civilians have no place in Dagestan.
"First of all, our sincere condolences to the families and loved ones, and to all Dagestanis, this tragedy concerns all people of Dagestan. Finding words at such difficult moments is difficult, of course. We have been and continue doing everything to ensure there are no such people in our society," the mufti said.
It was reported that a gunman fired a hunting rifle at people who came to a Kizlyar church on Sunday. Five women were killed. Four more people are in hospital with various injuries.
