Investigators probing Kizlyar shooter's affiliation with extremist organizations Peskov

Moscow, February 19, Interfax - Investigators are working to find out whether the man who shot and killed several parishioners of St. George Church in Dagestan's Kizlyar on Sunday could have belonged to extremist organizations acting in the region, Kremlin press secretary Dmitry Peskov said.

"You know that the investigation is ongoing, and the attacker's affiliation with extremist organizations is being probed, you know that the fight against extremist organizations is continuing in the region, and it is proceeding very purposefully and consistently," Peskov told journalists on Monday when asked whether the Kremlin believes the attack in Kizlyar might have been an attempt to destabilize the situation in the region in the wake of a broad-ranging anti-corruption campaign launched in Dagestan.

Extremist organizations, including those linked to international terrorism, are continuing their activities in Dagestan, he said.

"Our security agencies are working hard to curb such activities," Peskov said.
