Kadyrov says shocked by Kizlyar church attack

Moscow, February 19, Interfax - The attacker of a church in Dagestan's Kizlyar has no religion, Chechnya head Ramzan Kadyrov said on his Telegram channel.

"I am shocked by the murderous attack perpetrated in Kizlyar. A local resident fired a hunting gun, killing and injuring people. There can be no excuse for what he has done," Kadyrov said.

The assailant was neither Muslim nor Christian, Kadyrov said. "He has no religion at all. A believer will never make an attempt on the life of innocent people," he said.

"This is a criminal, a felon, a murderer who should be held liable to the fullest extent of the law. I think it is especially important to establish who and to what end encouraged him to take the gun and start shooting at people. The ones connected to this man deserve an equally severe punishment," Kadyrov said.

"I am sure that this criminal and his sponsors, if he had any, have neither direct nor indirect relation to Islam. The North Caucasus has always boasted close cooperation and mutual understanding between Muslims and Christians. Today we are ought to stop any attempts of provocateurs and enemies of Russia to encroach on this priceless value," Kadyrov said.

He extended condolences to the families and friends of the dead and wished the soonest recovery to the wounded.

A man fired a hunting gun on church goers in Kizlyar on Sunday. Five women were killed, and four people were injured and taken to a hospital.
