Voronezh, February 9, Interfax - Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia will pray for the repose of military pilot Roman Filipov, who was killed in the Idlib Province in Syria, Metropolitan Sergy of Voronezh and Lisky said at a commemorative meeting.
According to the metropolitan, Filipovís heroism answers the question about the goal and sense of life, about devotion to Motherland. "In distant Syria he was devoted to his duty and sacrificed his life for his Motherland," the metropolitan said and added that Patriarch Kirill conveys his condolences to the heroís family.
Over 30,000 people participated in the meeting including high-ranking officials of the Defense Ministry, classmates, relatives, representatives of the armed forces and clergy.
As was reported, SU-25 jet piloted by Filipov was downed on February 3 in the Idlib deescalation zone from portable missile system. The pilot catapulted and gave unequal battle to terrorists. He was surrounded and blown himself with a shell. Russian President Vladimir Putin assigned Filipov the Hero of the Russian Federation posthumously.
