Twelve held in south Kazakhstan for extremism propaganda on social media

Shymkent, February 1, Interfax - Police in South Kazakhstan Region have detained 12 supporters of destructive religious movements during raids carried out on Wednesday, a regional police spokesperson said.

The 24-hour operation was carried in the towns of Turkestan and Kentau and in the region's Arys, Shardara, Sozak and Tyulkubas districts, the spokesperson said.

"The suspects used social networking sites on the internet to distribute material propagating an extremist ideology," the spokesperson said.

A preliminary inquiry has been launched on charges of inciting social, ethnic, racial, or religious hatred (Article 174 of the Kazakhstan Criminal Code).
