Ukrainian Orthodox Church denies that Filaret's letter to Patriarch Kirill contained request for autocephaly

Moscow, December 1, Interfax - The Ukrainian Orthodox Church has denied claims in the Ukrainian that that the leader of the self-proclaimed Kiev Patriarchate asked for the autocephaly (independence) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in his letter to Patriarch Kirill.

"There is not a single word about autocephaly in the text of Filaret's letter; it only talks about the restoration of church unity. That's the only possible interpretation of the document that was received and discussed by the Bishops' Council," Bishop of Irpen Kliment (Ukrainian Orthodox Church) told reporters in Moscow.

The way "some representatives of the so-called Kiev Patriarchate" are now trying to interpret this letter "can hardly be identified with the position of the author of the letter and the position of the religious organization," he said.

Bishop Kliment said he believes one should not listen to "odious figures" now, but "wait for a certain period" so that the self-proclaimed Kiev Patriarchate can "state its position."
