Interior Ministry official suggests criminalizing gay propaganda

Moscow, October 19, Interfax - Chief of the Russian Interior Ministry Main Criminal Investigation Department's anti-pedophile section Sergey Alabin has suggested criminalizing propaganda of nontraditional sexual relations.

"There was a question about the propaganda of pedophilia, homosexuality. There is currently administrative liability for it, it's not very efficient, there are fines are envisaged. If it were to be criminalized..." Alabin said in the State Duma on Thursday at a meeting of a working group drafting bill increasing protection of children from sexual violence, including pedophilia.

The working group headed by State Duma deputy speaker Irina Yarovaya was established at the State Duma Council's decision on January 12, 2017. The group consists of representatives of all State Duma factions, Federation Council members, officials from the Prosecutor General's Office, the Investigative Committee, the Justice Ministry and the Healthcare Ministry, the Education and Science Ministry, the Labor and Social Security Ministry, as well as the children's rights commissioner.
