Catholics jointly with Orthodox believers will restore Orthodox churches in Syria

Moscow, October 9, Interfax - The Russian Orthodox Church together with the Roman Catholic Church set up a working group that will restore destroyed churches in Syria.

"We have set up a working group of the Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church. This group is now registering destroyed churches, we will help restore them," Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk, head of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations, said on the Church and the World program on Rossiya-24 (VGTRK) television channel.

He stressed that "besides churches it is necessary to help people restore their homes as their houses are destroyed or damaged" and "state together with Christian churches should unite their efforts."

"First of all, we should speak about large-scale projects of humanitarian character. We have to set up such conditions so that people, including Christians, can feel secure", the hierarch said.

He also reminded that some Syrian churches are fully destroyed and many monasteries are damaged, their shrines are plundered.
