Religious extremist from Tajikistan arrested in Kirov Region

Kirov, September 22, Interfax - A citizen of Tajikistan, who was on the inter-state wanted-persons list for propaganda of the ideology of the Salafi religious extremist movement, was detained in the Yuryansky District of the Kirov Region.

The foreigner was hiding in the village of Lozhkari, the Interior Ministry department for the region said in a statement on its website on Friday.

"He is wanted in his home country for a crime involving participation in the activities of a religious association that has been banned by a court due to extremist activities," the statement said.

Police and officials from the Federal Security Service's Kirov regional branch detained the man.

"An inspection of the place where the man lived yielded Islamic literature of an extremist nature, and also around one kilo of an unidentified green substance packed in bags," the statement said.

The detainee is now under arrest. He may be extradited to Tajikistan to serve his term there.
