Pressure on Myanmar leadership only to escalate tensions - Russian Foreign Ministry

Moscow, September 8, Interfax - Excessive pressure on the Myanmar authorities and the baseless accusations of persecution of the Islamic minority are complicating the already complex situation in that country, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told a press briefing on Friday.

"In the present circumstances, the only result of any pressure, in addition to the baseless accusations of cruel treatment of Muslims, would be an exacerbated situation inside and outside that country," Zakharova said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry is monitoring the Myanmar situation, in particular, "from the angle of leaks and fake news," Zakharova said. "Please use verified information," she told reporters.

As to the stance of Moscow, she said, "we believe that the Myanmar leadership will immediately do its best to prevent an escalation of violence, restore law and order across its entire territory, ensure normal socioeconomic conditions, and settle the problem of refugees."

"The Myanmar leadership's readiness to follow the recommendations of the advisory commission led by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan" should also be taken into consideration, Zakharova said.
