Putin speaks of Muslims' role in social life in Kurban Bayram greetings

Moscow, September 1, Interfax - Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Russia's Muslims on the Kurban Bayram (Eid al-Adha) holiday, the Kremlin press service said on Friday.

"This holiday, which marks the end of Muslims' pilgrimage to holy sites, has unique and centuries-old traditions that remind people of the firm spiritual roots and the continuity of generations that constitute the powerful, creative and unifying force of the Russian Muslim community," the president said in his Kurban Bayram greetings.

"The unity of the ummah [community] has always been and remains a firm foundation for enhancing the interethnic and interfaith dialogue and for tackling day-to-day tasks of the country's development. It is pleasing to see how this huge potential is being translated into relevant educational, awareness raising and cultural projects and is being used for the benefit of peace and accord in society," Putin said.
