Patriarch Kirill considers Orthodox, Catholic Churches' joint provision of assistance to Middle Eastern countries uniting factor

Moscow, August 22, Interfax - Catholic and Orthodox Churches need to provide humanitarian assistance to Middle Eastern countries together, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia said.

"Our Church is actively participating in humanitarian assistance to [people] suffering from the conflict in Syria and other countries of the Middle East. It is very important to rely on broader support of the entire Christian community in this work," the patriarch said at a meeting with Vatican's Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

"I believe relations between the Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church in terms of providing assistance to those affected by the conflict in the Middle East would be a very important uniting factor," he said.

By developing cooperation in the humanitarian field, it would be possible to create a basis for joint projects in support of those embroiled in military conflicts in the Middle East, Patriarch Kirill said.
