Washington urges Russia to lift ban on Jehovah's Witnesses' activities

Washington, July 20, Interfax - The United States' authorities are concerned over the decision of the Russian Supreme Court, which had upheld the ban on activities of the Jehovah's Witnesses in Russia, the U.S. Department of State said.

"We urge the Russian authorities to lift the ban on Jehovah's Witnesses' activities in Russia, to reverse the closing of the Jehovah's Witnesses Administrative Center, and to release any members of religious minorities that continue to be unjustly detained for so-called 'extremist' activities," it said.

At that, the U.S. Department of State urged Russia to observe the freedom of religion guaranteed by the country's constitution.

Earlier in July, the Russian Supreme Court upheld the ruling of April 20 on the recognition of the Jehovah's Witnesses as an extremist organization and its abolition in Russia.
