Moscow, July 3, Interfax - Head of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations Metropolitan Hilarion criticized the image of the Church, which film director Andrey Zvyagintsev creates in his films.
"I am not surprised that in situation of current political conjuncture in significant degree conditioned by confrontation between the East and the West, western festivals give prizes to the films that present Russia in dark colors. It would be strange if the situation will be contrary. From the other side we cannot help reacting when spectators see perverted image of the Church and our Motherland, unfortunately that is what I saw in Leviathan," the hierarch said on The Church and the World program on Rossiya-24 (VGTRK) television channel.
According to him, Zvyagintsev presents the Church "absolutely not objectively."
"It is a very prejudiced view of a person who does not love the Church, wants to offend the Church and to implant negative image of the Church in people's minds through his works," the metropolitan said.
