Patriarch Kirill asks not to give him flowers on his name day, but to fundraise for suffering Syrian people

Moscow, May 18, Interfax - Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia blessed to send money saved by Moscow parishes on flowers for his name day (on May 24) to the suffering people of Syria, funds will be collected in frames of the interreligious work group of the Council for interaction with religious associations at the Russian president.

"Funds will be collected to a special account of the Synodal Department on Church Charity and Social Ministry," head of the patriarchal press service priest Alexander Volkov told journalists on Thursday.

According to him, everyone can join the action and donate to this account.

The priest reminded that earlier Patriarch Kirill had asked to substitute the custom to give flowers to the primate on the feasts with fundraising for those in need. Last year on the eve of his birthday, Patriarch Kirill asked rectors of Moscow parishes instead of buying flowers to convey money to St. Alexis Central Clinical Hospital and on Christmas medical equipment bought on the collected means was given to the hospital. Patriarch Kirill addressed the same request to church rectors on Easter eve.

"I suggest following this way on the feasts when Moscow parishes used to give flowers to the patriarch," the primate said speaking at the Moscow diocesan meeting.
