The Russian Church and the Catholic Church should stop confrontation between East and West - patriarch at the meeting with the Italian president

Moscow, April 13, Interfax - The Russian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church are urged to make the world more peaceful, Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia believes.

"The Catholic Church and the Russian Orthodox Church can and should do everything to make the world a more peaceful place, to decrease the level of confrontation between East and West so that we again feel ourselves belonging to one cultural environment, which we call Europe," the patriarch said on Wednesday at his meeting with Italian president Sergio Mattarella in Moscow.

The primate of the Russian Church recalled his historic meeting with Pope Francis of Rome as one of its main topics was peacekeeping.

"I think our shared convictions - Pope Francis' and mine - are that today religious factor should contribute to reconciliation of people in the European continent and spiritual union among them," patriarch said.
